Lillholmen - Burial site

This small island of Lillholmen, in the strait between Näset and Björkudden, became an early summer burial site. Its fine sand was well suited for temporary graves for the dead in the area. In late autumn, when all the ice had melted away, the coffins were dug up and transported by horse-drawn carriage to the church and cemetery in Arjeplog for traditional burials.

The last person buried on Lillholmen in summer was Marta Kristina Jonsson-Lundgren. She was born in Bäcknäs but had lived her life in Reback as Per Lundgren's wife. She died on August 8, 1904
